Thursday
October 14, 2021
9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

WEBINAR

* Follow-up Guided Zoom Discussion (11/15/21)

I still recall hearing the voice of the flight attendant during my first plane ride as a father, “In the event of emergency, put your oxygen mask on first; then help your child.” WAIT, I thought. Isn’t that kind of selfish? Aren’t we always supposed to care for our kids first?

Silly me. Those words serve as an important lesson to parents, and NOT just pertaining to oxygen. Parenting kids in today’s world– and in this particular area of the world— is a joyful and satisfying, yet increasingly complex, stressful and often exhausting, responsibility. As those flight attendants knew, we’re of no use to our kids if we’re overwhelmed. As parents, it’s crucial we keep in touch with our own physical, mental and emotional pulse so we can provide the nurturing structure and guidance our children need.

School psychologist David P. Sylvestro, MA, CSP, will discuss ways we can keep ourselves “steady and ready”— making sure our oxygen masks are properly on— by knowing how to recognize when our own stress levels may be interfering with our parenting goals and what to do when that happens.
